Stablecoins are a type of digital currency designed to keep a steady value by being linked to a traditional currency, like the Hong Kong dollar. Think of a stablecoin as a digital version of the money in your wallet, which you can use instantly and securely for transactions online or through apps, without worrying about sudden price swings.
HSBC’s stablecoin debut on PayMe expands digital payments
HSBC has introduced HSBC RedCoin (ticker RCHKD), its first stablecoin, on Hong Kong’s PayMe app, used by over 3.3 million people. This move lets users open a stablecoin wallet directly in the app for peer-to-peer payments and spending at more than 100,000 merchants, without needing to switch apps or services.
Issued under a licence from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, HSBC RedCoin operates on the bank’s own technology infrastructure for security. The bank also plans to bring stablecoin wallet features to its HSBC HK Mobile Banking app and enable tokenised investment subscriptions later this year, eventually expanding stablecoin use to corporate and institutional clients.
